The Spear of Tyranny

Average review score:

Excellent Series
This has been an excellent series of books, though in book 2 I was disappointed that salvation wasn't spelled out a bit clearer. Look forward to more books by these two authors.

Excellent thought provoking novel.
I thoroughly enjoyed this very plausible account of 'end-time' events.

It is written as a sequel to the author's previous novel entitled 'By Dawn's Early Light', which deals with the prophesied invasion of Israel as depicted in the Book of Ezekiel.

'Spear Of Tyranny' takes in world events after the thwarting of this invasion and the rise of the Anti-Christ in the guise of Adrian Romulus, who forms a 'one-world government' and requires that everyone takes a 'mark' in their right hand or forehead, without which no-one can buy or sell;- The Biblical 'mark of the beast'.

The story revolves around this and other events in the Biblical 'Great Tribulation' leading up to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

Very easy to read and will hold your attention from beginning to end.

excellent!
This is certainly one of the best novels about the end times. Fans of the Left Behind series will enjoy this book & the authors' previous two novels Flee The Darkness & By Dawns Early Light.

Please could the previous reviewer learn to stop shouting (use lower case) as it's very hard to read. Thanks.

a Masterful revelation of the Jesus in the Old Testament
My boss lent me his copy of this book as I was searching for answers about the Trinity while I was reading James R. White's The Forgotten Trinity. While I read these two books simultaneously and I recognized that I was reading Rambsel's book for pleasure and as a break from White's intense look at the Trinity. I learned so much more about the foretelling of Jesus in the Old Testament. The Jewish perspective on the God/Man through the stories in Genesis were even more enriching to me than the knowledge of secret codes placed there by God. I got the feeling that the codes were put in by God to tell those who put more faith in Science than in Spirit a special message: "I'm here!" I believe some of the television specials on the "Bible Code" do a better job on explaining it than this book. I learned so much though and was amazed so often that I'm still giving it 5 stars enthusiastically. My boss let me keep the book since I loved it so much.

Achieving Excellence in Fund Raising
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (November, 1991)
Authors: Henry A. Rosso and Associates
Average review score:

Very good. Inspiring and practical guide for set up.
Rosso and Associates have created a book to inspire those who find themselves in a relatively undefined fundraising position. The book provides a conceptual framework from which to view fundraising as, aside from the mission, the most vital aspect of a not-for-profit organisation. You can approach this book from an absolute beginner level or from an experienced fundraising background looking for a little inspiration and back-up. The book is, understandably, quite grounded in American law and culture so its direct application to other countries is limited.

A must read for everyone involved in fund raising
The late Henry Rosso, one of fund raising's all time great teachers and practitioners, gets to the heart and soul of fund raising as he clearly presents the basic techniques. His love for philanthropy and his respect and admiration for donors is infectious.

The Almanac of American Politics 1998: The Senators, the Representatives and the Governors: Their Records and Election Results, Their States and Districts (Cloth)

GREAT INVALUABLE TOOL FOR WHOSE WHO IN WASHINGTON!
My 1996 edition is so dog-eared, highlighted, and noted that you can tell it's one of my most common reference tools. I use it when politicians are on talk shows, to give me an idea of where they are coming from. It usually proves there is a huge media imbalance of views on network television, so I've switched to C-Span. Seeing a voting record clues me in on where a Congressman is likely to stand on an issue, before he opens his mouth. I use it for background information, and to send faxes and letters. I use it to keep track of my own Congressmen and to find others who have voted the way I would vote, to contact, if an important issue is pending for a vote. It's only big handicap is a lack of E-Mail addresses. I could do much more with it, if I had them. I highly recommend this book and am saving for an updated version.

Brian Wayne Wells, Esquire, reviews Almanac of American Pol.
Since 1971, every two years Michael Barone and Grant Ujifusa (in early editions Douglas Matthews also contributed) have teamed to provide a comprehensive study of the latest Congress just elected the previous November.

This book is a staple of research inside the "beltway" of Washington D.C. and is priced by the standards of reference books sold there. The price can cause "sticker shock" for those of us located outside the beltway. Nonetheless, it is an invaluable research tool which belongs close at hand, near the desk of any one who hopes to speak knowledgeably to a member of Congress or a committee of Congress regarding any issue currently being voted on by Congress.

Additionally, the book provides the most up-to-date information on the governors, lists the constitutional officers and provides the political makeup of the legislature of each of the 50 states.

The Antonines: The Roman Empire in Transition
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (December, 1994)
Author: Michael Grant
Average review score:

A good general history of the Antonines
'The Antonines' is a necessary work on the second century A.D. by a respected Roman historian.
Part One of this work by Michael Grant gives a brief presentation of the salient imperial powers of the time, Antonius Pius (138-161), Marcus Aurelius (161-180), Lucius Verus (161-169) and Commodus (180-192) in a concise manner. However, it is as it reads - a nicely presented synopsis of Roman imperial history from 138 to 192 A.D.
Part One's opening chapter provides the reader with details of Antonius Pius' actions, a diagnostic on his character to explain those actions - leaning heavily on the potential explanations for the Pius appellation - Aurelius' conservatism, Veres ineffectiveness and Commodus dramatic impact on the empire to a degree not seen since Nero. Moving swiftly onto Marcus Aurelius, Grant summarizes his reign as coping "with appalling problems with a conscientiousness that raised him to the top class of rulers." Touching on Aurelius' time spent on the Rhine frontier, his famous Meditations, conflict with Avidius Cassius, his wife Faustina and his state of health, Grant portrays Marcus Aurelius as a ruler who engendered a great deal of respect, a respect that swiftly disappears with the biography of Commodus.
After a brief note on the eternal critcism of Aurelius for having his son succeed him, (there is an insistence by the author on the idea of hereditary dynastic succession in Imperial Rome which doesn't bear much proof particularly as two pages later he states that "the senate, though conscious that the selection of the 'best man' had ceased to have any reality..." thus implying there was no concept) Grant sweeps into his biography of Commodus. Grant's commentary on Commodus highlights him as a ruler who provided a strong and favourable impression in the first few years of his reign, but later biographies depict him as a drunkard, debauched from the earliest years, and focus on his unseemly gladiatorial enthusiasm all of which leads to serious administrative disaster for the empire. Eventually, as Grant states: his 'wild self-indulgence and quasi-mystical autocratic religiosity' led to his murder.
Part Two deals with two themes of the Antonine Age: literature and art.
The first is split into three sections: Latin, Greek and Christian writings and is no more than a brief biography and synopis of the extant works of each. Moving from first rate (as the author terms it) authors such as Fronto, Lucian, Aurelius, Pausanias Justin to other authors including the Second Sophists, the Apologists, Gnostic writers Grant gives what is fundamentally a brief history, notable works and precis of the major writings of each in each section.
The second focuses on the art and architecture of the Antonine period, from busts and statues to theatres, expanded by many pictures and Grant concludes with a chapter on the Antonine Age.
The work comes through as a neat biographical history of the Antonine Emperors and the leading literay and artistic names of the period. As such this is an excellent starter book for anyone interested in the period and a useful reference book to students more familiar with the period.

Typical Michael Grant Greatness!
This is a book about Rome's "Golden Age." It covers the period from Antoninus Pius to Commodus (138-192 A.D.). Antoninus Pius & Marcus Aurelius (as well as Trajan & Hadrian, who came shortly before) are among the greatest of the Roman emperors. Sadly, Commodus (Aurelius' son) was one of the worst leaders of all time. As a matter of fact, Commodus was SO bad that many Romans accused his mother of infidelity as they could not believe how such an egregious fellow could have possibly sprung from the loins of one so noble as Aurelius.

Grants' book gives a detailed look at this epoch, as well as a glimpse at the art & literature of the time. The book contains helpful illustrations & photographs of Roman architecture & coinages of the time.

This book gives a detailed picture of one of the most pivotal moments in Roman history. Some would say that Roman history went downhill from the reign of Commodus onward. While I think that this is a slight exaggeration, there is nonetheless evidence that this was (until Commodus) the closest that Rome ever came to achieving their utopian "Camelot." A great work by an astute scholar.

The book was enjoyable but with the Mary Stewart novels have a lot of detail that can be drawn out.

When I first started reading this book, I thought that it would be similar to other authors work. I was wrong. This book ruled! I couldn't put it down.

Apocalypse: The Coming Judgment of the Nations
Published in Paperback by Frontier Research Publications (July, 1997)
Author: Grant R. Jeffrey
Average review score:

Learn about the coming judgement of Nations
Another of Jeffrey's earlier works, this book deals with explanations of many biblical prophecies that some people may find hard to understand. In "Apocalypse" you can learn about the biblical prophecies concerning America (yes, there are some!) why the early church believed in not only the Rapture, but a pre-tribulation rapture, what the final world church will look like and what it will do, what the "Mark of the Beast" might be and how to avoid it for as long as you can, What happened to the "lost" tribes of Israel (they're not as "lost" as you think!) and what happens if you're "Left Behind". A great book for beginners or advanced students of biblical prophecy, this book is recommended if you like any of the "Left Behind" books or Jeffrey's other works.

Very extensive and convincing look at Bible prophesy
The book looks at the fulfilled and soon to be fulfilled prophesy surronding the second comming of Jesus Christ. It is a very detailed look at the methodolgy employed by God to show his people signs of the miraclous return of His Son. A must read for any serious Bible prophesy buff.

The Army of the Caesars
Published in Hardcover by M Evans & Co (October, 1992)
Author: Michael Grant
Average review score:

army of men, army of gods
ever wonder how those crazy roman emperors retained their power? in short, the army provided the roman imperators, or caesars, all the protection they needed. whether from the senate or the barbarians of foreign lands, the army protected the caesars almost every step of the way, unless, of course, the army decided to back another man for the job. The army was so powerful that after Nero (the last of the imperial caesars) the army began to decide who they wanted as emperor. the senate, which longed to have the republic back, knew that the state could never pay the army and therefore Rome would forever be under the rule of the emperor and his army. This book details the weaponry of the army, and the classes and sub-classes within the army. It explains the role of the praetorium guard and the tactical skills of archers, cavalry, and infantry. This book is necessary for a complete understanding of the Roman state. One can know Latin and all the emperors, but to know the guys who died on the front and looted for their personal gain enhances the scholarship of Roman history. By reading this book you will ascertain the importance the emperors and people of Rome had with the army.

Vital work on the influence of the legions in the Empire
There are books covering the evolution of Roman army as an insturment of power that have far more information on the development of weapons, doctrines, and leadership than this work by the always great Michael Grant. However, you will find none that has a more concentrated focus on how the Army of the Empire evolved from a means to power for Emperors to a power unto itself and over the leaders and civilization it was meant to serve. Grant deftly traces how economic and social factors spurred the professionals of the legions into realizing their potential political influence over both Emperors and Empire and how this transitional dynamic influenced the course of Roman history. A definite must have for the builder of a classical history library.

This Cruel War: The Civil War Letters of Grant and Malinda Taylor
Published in Hardcover by Mercer University Press (March, 2000)
Authors: Grant Taylor, Malinda Taylor, Ann K. Blomquist, and Robert A. Taylor
Average review score:

Great letters but lackluster editing
The letters included in this collection are noteworthy for their content and relative completeness. Rarely does one get to read both sides of a Civil War correspondance. Usually letters from home were lost or destroyed during troop movements and only the soldier's letters remain. Grant Taylor, however, managed to hold on to many of his wife's letters and the perspective this gives on the dynamics between husband and wife is fascinating. Anyone who doubts the impact of homefront hardships on the frontline soldier need only follow Grant Taylor's growing frustration as he slips from uneasy acceptance of his military service in 1862 to depressed introspection and resignation toward his own death in 1865.

Editorially, this book suffers from a military slant that avoids discussing the very things that make these letter important: the soldier's concern for family and home and the impact that concern had on his mental and emotional condition. Footnoting is haphazard at best and wavers between military history and endlessly repetitive genealogy. I can appreciate the work that went into identifying each person mentioned either by given or nicknames, but by page 30 we are already familiar with who the cousins and brothers are and don't need to be reminded.

Read the book for its appeal as a primary source but skip the notes.

Two views of the Civil War told personally
This book is a collection of 160 letters between soldier-husband and homefront-wife from 1862-1865. The remarkable quality about this collection is the interaction between Grant relating his military experiences and Malinda keeping him informed about their children, the farm, and friends and relatives in their community. Very readable book!

superb
Many hard hours have been put into this book. First the letters had to be transcribed from a handwriting to a typed print. You feel everything from this aspect...especially when you know lineage. The reader appreciates the finest detail. A movie could come from these letters so easily...this was the time!

Belongs on every trader's bookshelf
I normally do not like most books written on the subject of futures trading. All the way from their bombastic titles to the poorly thought out ideas which lose money consistently. This book is different. It contains a lot of new ideas and some pretty interesting information. The chapter on "split openings" is well worth the price of the book alone. It is a very good manual for short term traders, particularly day traders.

excellent book for stock and commodity traders or wannabes
I couldn't put this book down for the first 1/3rd...and liked the 2nd third...but the last 1/3rd dragged. Lots of good rules and explanations and ideas from a practical point of view. Well worth the price, and I learned a lot.

i made money the first day i read the book.grant is great
the ideas generated from this book, helped me make money right away.Grant drilled into me the importance of what the winners do and what they do is they concentrate most of their time and energy on the opening, which most of us amateurs, the majority, tend to ignore. If you want to succeed in the world of trading, Grant points out, you must start doing what the winners do.I strongly recommend this book for the day trader and position trader.Put away all your books on indicators and buy this book.
